Climb On

10 hours away from hitting the road West to colorful Colorado and the beginning of "2006 Expedition for 6". I will be documenting the entire trip to be uploaded on my blog when I return. Detailed accounts of the climbs and routes that will be easy to follow from the experienced trekker to the novice. I will be defining routes by landmarks and visual accounts to make it easier for anyone to understand. When I was a beginner trekker I found most information on routes and ways up and down 14'ers that I never felt comfortable before any climb. 14'ersorBust blog will help to put your mind at easy and give you information that you will use on every climb. Please stop back and let me know what you think... all trip reports are welcomed.

NOTE:
Public Access to South Park District “Fourteeners”
HOUSE BILL -06-1049
In recent years, public access to Mounts Lincoln, Bross and Democrat has been denied because private land owners that own the access routes to and summits of these peaks have had concerns about liability, theft, trespassing and vandalism. To address the liability issue, Bill 1049 was unanimously passed by Colorado State Legislature and signed by Governor Owens on March 8, 2006.

Itinerary:
6.28.06 - Iowa to Denver via I-80
6.29.06 - leave Denver to Kite Lake Trail Head
6.30.06 - 3 am - leave campsite at TH and summit Bross, Cameron, Demo and Lincoln. Head to Quandary TH and camp
7.1.06 - Summit Quandary - head back to Denver via I-70 and summit Evans.

Mountain Hardware - Epic Jacket

I recently purchased Mountain Hardware's Epic jacket. I think this will come in handy during the mid-morning T-storms that blanket the Front Range and Ten Mile Range. For 10 years I've packed a light weight Helly Hanson that I stuffed in the corner of my pack. It was a basic modle with not a lot of bells and whistles but it did the trick. I also added some color to my colorless gear. The "What if I broke my leg and needed rescued" thought started in and ... hence the orange jacket.
If you own the Epic or know someone who does, write a review and let our community know what you think.

RATING:
5 Stars = Mt. Elbert
4 Stars = Longs Peak
3 Stars = Kit Carson Peak
2 Stars = Elington Point
1 Star = SunShine Peak

Buddha Boy - Bomjon

This is one of the most mind blowing and exciting stories that I have ever read.

Ram Bahadur Bomjon, the 15-year-old “new Buddha” who meditated under a tree in Nepal for ten months without any food or water. Read More

Colorado - Ten Mile Range

Exactly 15 days until heading West on I-80. It's my long awaited annual pilgrimage to the Rockies, my road therapy and my self evaluation and inner challenge. Pushing the limits as I age makes more sense as each year passes. It's the reality check to make sure I'm still alive... and so far I have such luck. 14er's or Bust.

Trail Shoes or Boots?

I finally bit the bullet and purchased a pair of Merrell trail shoes. I've always been a "traditionalist" when it came to my feet and figured what better protection is there against the elements that a hard core pair of full leather boots. This question came to mind as Team Smoke was decending Mt. Elbert last year. My toes were jamming into the toes of my boots making it extreamly difficult to walk. With the grind of a decent this added pain wasn't welcomed and often complained about. Even with my trekking poles this issue had gone on long enough. What also sold me on trail shoes versus the traditional leather boot was the fact that T from BIG D always, and that is the last 6 14'ers (including the dreaded Longs Peak), always trekked in tennis shoes. This never made sense to me but after all his 14'ers in them it really didn't matter. If T could climb in tennis shoes (shoes he's had for over a decade) I certainly could climb in trail shoes.

USA vs Czech Republic

Pathetic. This was like watching the Heat be pounded by the Mavs in game 2. No chance, no thrills, no fun watching. Missed opportunities for the US is on the top of Areana's list or possibly next to the fact that the US had 6 shots all day and maybe 2 on net. If Johnson would put a body part on the ball there might have been 3 shots on net. The US looked 1/2 step behind the Czechs if not a full step. Areana needs to go back to the ol' dry erase board and put together a starting 11 that wants play soccer or we'll be looking at a dismal and quick end to our '06 WC.

Team COLOWA - "2006 Expedition for 6"

So it's set. The week of June 30th, Bross, Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, Evans and Quandray are all going down. For this flatlander it is the highlight each year and this year is going to break me into the double digit figure of my ultimate goal, sumitting all 14ers in Colorado. I've tackled Grays, Torreys, Bierstadt, Elbert, Sneffels and the dreaded Longs Peak in RMNP. This year I am going to double my total to 12 (that is if I conqure my task). I climb with two of the greatest climbers in the states, a 30 something entrepreneur and father of two (girls) Turbo Roy and a hard core music junkie, T of Big D. These boyz can climb, hands down. Not only is there back yard the Front Range but their drive to conqure the allusive 54 - 14ers in Colorado is a drive like mine... and thanks guys for letting this flatlander from the Sili-Corn valley of Iowa tag along. There will be lots more to come from 14'ers or Bust; trip reports, trail head conditions, snow reports, photos, routes, rocks, tasty beer from micros, music, gear reports, food for the campsite, elevation, mileage, weather and whatever else falls face first on our 2006 expedition for 6, Team Smoke: Turbo Roy, T of Big D and the Flatlander. Be sure to check back for updates of our trek, and remember... other peoples pain is funny... so if you want to laugh you'll have to come back.
